-
Get low.
Hold your phone on the ground and angling up to get the full view of the tree from an interesting perspective.
-
Turn all of the lights off…
…except the ones on the tree, of course!
-
Manually raise the exposure.
Hold your finger on the phone, touching your subject until the exposure locks, and then raise the exposure to brighten the lights.
-
Use an app to edit your pictures.
I used VSCO and pictapgo to edit the pictures in this post. Here are some more of my favorite photo apps!
-
Fill the frame.
You can eliminate clutter in the background, and bring the focus to just the tree, and your subject by filling the frame with lights, part of the tree, and your subject.
-
Create intentional blur.
Stand away from the tree (even 5 feet will do the trick). Hold your hand in front of your camera just far enough that the camera will be able to grab focus. Touch the screen until it locks focus on your hand. Move the hand in front of the camera, and snap the shot!
-
Try taking pictures during the day.
There is no rule stating you have to take pictures of the tree at night. If you’re really hoping to get some shots with your phone that aren’t as grainy, try shooting during the day!
-
Shoot through the tree.
Shooting through the tree will frame your subject with lights and tree.
I hope these tips help you to take better pictures of the Christmas tree with your iphone.
